A bag has to work for the purchase your customer is carrying. Start with the shape and weight of that purchase, then compare how each option behaves at the counter. The material name alone does not tell you whether a particular bag will do the job.
Short answer
Test the exact bag with a typical purchase before committing to a bulk order. Dimensions and construction matter as much as material.
Measure the purchases you actually pack
List a small purchase, your most common purchase, and an awkward purchase. Record the dimensions of the items together and how staff arrange them. Include room for handles or closure instead of choosing a bag that only just fits.
For bottles, test the actual container shape and a fully loaded bag. A description such as “bottle bag” does not establish how many bottles it will carry or how it performs when they move. Ask the supplier for the intended load and use.
Compare the exact paper and plastic options
Paper and plastic bags each come in different constructions. A handled paper bag, a flat paper bag, and a gusseted plastic bag should not be treated as one interchangeable size. Compare their listed dimensions, handles, base, and material specifications.
For example, McCracken lists SOS paper bags with side gussets and a foldable top, alongside merchandise bags with or without gussets. D&D lists several plastic formats, including T-shirt, produce/roll, and poly bags. Those are format choices, not a universal ranking of strength or quality.
Request samples where available. Try opening, loading, and carrying each candidate in the way it will be used at your store. Set aside any option that tears, loses its shape, or makes the purchase difficult to carry during that trial.
| Decision | Paper options | Plastic options |
|---|---|---|
| Listed formats | McCracken: SOS and merchandise bags, with or without gussets | D&D: T-shirt, produce/roll, and poly bags, among other formats |
| Useful distinction | A flat merchandise bag and a gusseted SOS bag create different packing shapes | A roll format and a loose bag require different dispensing arrangements |
| Specify before ordering | Width, height, gusset, base, closure, and paper specification | Width, height, gusset, handles, dispensing format, and film specification |
| Deciding test | Trial the exact construction with the intended purchase | Trial the exact construction with the intended purchase |
Try it at the checkout before buying in volume
Use a small trial quantity during a normal shift if possible. Ask staff whether the bags separate easily, whether the stack stays tidy, and whether different sizes are easy to tell apart. A bag that seems convenient at a desk may behave differently at a busy counter.
Consider a simple size range. Too many near-identical options can make replenishment harder, while one size for every purchase can produce a poor fit. Give each chosen size a clear label and a defined storage position.
Compare case quantity and restocking needs
Count bags used over representative shifts and keep unusual events separate. Compare that usage with the case quantity before deciding how much to order. Include the shelf or floor space required for unopened cases, not just the stack under the counter.
Compare delivered cost per bag only after both options have passed the practical trial. Buying more of an unsuitable bag does not resolve the fit problem. Keep a record of the chosen dimensions and supplier item number for repeat orders.
Keep the product description precise
If a bag needs special performance, ask for documentation for that exact item. Do not infer food-contact suitability, recycled content, recyclability, or a permitted use from its appearance. For local bag requirements, check the current rules for your store’s location before ordering.
Browse Gokul’s Bags & Packaging department to identify candidates. Confirm dimensions, construction, pack quantity, and availability before placing an order. Custom printing is a separate question to discuss rather than an assumed feature of a stock bag.
